Day 1 @ SAA: “Archive it, store it, access it in the future”

This is part of the mission of the Internet Archive, a group located in San Francisco’s historical Presidio area that took upon themselves the huge task of archiving the internet. Today, I had the chance to attend a tour of their facilities and was given an overview of their mission, practice, and current projects followed by a Q&A session.

After leaving around 9am, a group of three new friends and I left our basecamp at Vogelsang HSC and headed for the peak. Vogelsang’s peak tops out at close to 11,500′—the highest I’ve ever stood. Before today I’ve driven to a peak of about 8400′ and alpine meadows at 9500′. Our camp was at 10,180′ elevation. Quite an odd place to find an archive right?…

Summer of perfect design

Talk about the perfectly designed summer of my life—this was it. This summer I spent 14 weeks working as an experience and interaction designer, conceptualizing and rapidly prototyping for T-Mobile at their Creation Center (!cc). Here I not only found a fantastic company to work for, new friends, and exciting projects, but I found what type of designer I want to be.

One last great conversation…

Picture happy hour on a Friday at 5:35pm on 8/8/08—same day as the opening for the Olympic Games. I’m at this great restaurant & lounge in downtown Seattle one block from the !CreationCenter having some food and drinks and last conversations with my summer colleagues. Towards the end of the evening, the conversation turned from design, technology, and Seattle summers to the word “Designer”.
